"The Pownalls are a noteworthy family both in America and in England.  They have been "written up" in various books, but to the author's knowledge, no "comprehensive" work has been done on them and their allied families, hence, this work.  It is fortunate these families, for the most part, were members of religious denominations that kept excellent records.  Also, in many cases, they were deeply involved in the secular events of their day.  Thus, many records are available both here and in England.  This book is the result of sixteen years of genealogical research.  It deals largely with the author's direct line, which is that of George Pownall, Jr. of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and his descendants.  However, where it has been possible to access such information, the author has included collateral lines.  It is important, when discussing the Pownalls in America, to include a brief history of allied and, where possible, any information on related families, as they were prominent in Bucks, Chester, and Lancaster Counties.  The author has also included such information as is available on English allied families.
